A very special group of eighth graders at Island Trees Middle School raised $1200 to help the people of Darfur.  After studying the horrors of the Holocaust, the students researched the atrocities occurring daily in the Sudan today.

These thirteen and fourteen year olds convinced their English teacher to use the school's "Learning Fair" as a venue to inform the rest of the students, the teachers and the parents about what was happening in Darfur.

They designed a huge banner titled "Yesterday and Today" illustrated the Holocaust of 1940and the Holocaust in Darfur. They wrote poems, designed hand-made 'wish' bracelets, printed out petitions to be signed and made packets of information to hand out to those who were previously uniformed about this crisis.

The students raised $1200 by selling bracelets, water, baked goods, candy and they also received generous donations from the teachers in the school. These hard-working students have already contacted the high school advisor that they will be continuing their efforts next year. Over the summer, they have set up in the local library in their ceaseless drive to inform the public and collect donations.
