The Help Darfur Now club of Marlboro Middle School began just this past fall.  Students have volunteered their time to work throughout the school year to raise money and bring awareness to this cause.

This year, they planned outreach activities such as a postcard writing campaign, put up posters throughout the school, and sold t-shirts, bracelets, and buttons we created for the cause.

Student such as Victoria LoPresti, Kristen Tierney, Dalia Bonett and Sierra Rosen took the lead in educating their peers and making our school aware of what is happening in Darfur.  These students planned fundraisers in and out of the school.  Other students like Regina Normandia, Michael Tanenbaum, and Brandon Klein heard about our club and joined later bringing the same enthusiasm and leadership.

Our culminating event was an exhibit in the library, where our students hosted social studies classes through the school and showed them posters and power point presentations created by students as well as videos about Darfur.   We were able to send 185 postcards to President Bush as well as a petition to Secretary General Ban Ki Moon with over 350 signatures.  We have even inspired students who are not in the club – three students who saw our exhibit raised over $100 this past weekend because of what they learned from our display.

Special thanks to the LoPresti family for their donation, to the families of each member who support their hard work, to the students in Ms. Schiller’s class for their support and fundraising efforts, and to each and every member of the club who worked so hard throughout the year!
