Proclamation on Genocide
Read the Proclamation on Genocide . Modify it so that it applies to your town. Make an appointment with your Mayor and ask for him/her to sign it. Then plan for it to be read at a Town Council meeting in October. Encourage supporters of the Proclamation to attend the Town Council meeting. Organize a petition-signing that supports your Proclamation and bring the petition to the Town Council meeting.

Rasing Awareness

  • Send people to our website. The site has a news feed with up-to-date stories on Darfur. Additionally, you can access articles about Help Darfur Now.
  • Show the 10 minute DVD filmed on the ground in Darfur; it is educational and very moving. Can be shown to the club (and in social studies classes? Or homerooms?). Kids in the clubs can go to classes and give intro. (We can send you a free DVD).
  • Write an article for the school newspaper about Darfur/Help Darfur Now.
  • Write letters to the editors of local newspapers about what is going on in Darfur.
  • Send a press release to your local newspaper about your newly formed Help Darfur Now chapter. If you send us the contact information for your local newspaper (name of paper and phone number)and what you are doing or plan to do, we can send out the press release.
  • Hand out flyers and post them around school and town.
  • Have an assembly; we can try to arrange for a speaker to come to your group.
  • Talk to your rotary, other town organizations, church, synagogue, or other religious organization about discussing the atrocities and/or doing a fundraiser.Recruit friends from other schools/religious groups/organizations to open chapters of Help Darfur Now.
  • Call President Bush at 202-456-1111 and urge him to send support to Darfur now.
  • Contact your representative to urge him or her to vote for the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act in support of Darfur. Locate your Congressperson at http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/?lvl=L
  • Call th U.S. Representative to the United Nations Phone: (212)-415-4050 and urge him to put pressure on the UN to expedite the sending of NATO and UN Peacekeeping units to Darfur.

Fundraising Ideas

  • Sell HDN T-shirts, gel bracelets, and tributes
  • Begin a Spare change drive throughout the school and in the community. Students can go to local stores with fundraising change containers and explanation of the genocide and ask stores if they will place the containers on the counter.
  • Show the movie Hotel Rwanda; charge an admission fee and sell candy at a profit. Candy will have Help Darfur Now logo stickers on them. Students can get extra credit for social studies (can you arrange for this?) if they attend. (Candy from Costco or write to Hershey or another candy company and ask for contributions).
  • Can also show the 10 minute CD about Darfur before the Hotel Rwanda movie and/or give an intro speech about what is happening now in Darfur and that it is genocide occurring again.
  • Hold a raffle (winner to be announced at the Hotel Rwanda showing?)
  • Send fundraising letters to family and friends. Students have a sample on Help Darfur Now stationery.
  • Email fundraising campaign (we are signed on with PayPal).
  • Benefit concert for Darfur.
  • Student-faculty basketball or baseball game benefit
  • Candy sale/bake sale
  • Sell candy and bottles of water (with Help Darfur Now stickers) at home basketball, baseball and other sports games.

Any ideas you have are welcome!
